About SimHaven

SimHaven exists because some games never really leave us.

Why SimHaven Exists

For a lot of us, The Sims Online was more than a game. It was a place. It was the sound of someone entering your lot. It was a room full of people skilling, joking, cooking, building, decorating, and somehow turning pixel furniture into memories.

It was “Mokey-Hokey,” the lot doorbell, the late-night conversations, and the friendships that stayed with people long after the cities went quiet.

Years later, FreeSO gave that feeling back.

With Thanks to FreeSO

FreeSO was an incredible fan-made reimplementation of The Sims Online, created by Rhys Simpson and supported over the years by developers, artists, moderators, object creators, event planners, community members, lot builders, testers, and players who kept the world alive.

The amount of work that went into FreeSO is hard to overstate. It was not just code. It was preservation, creativity, patience, and love for a strange little online world that meant a lot to people.

SimHaven would not be possible without that work. We are deeply grateful to Rhys, the FreeSO team, and the wider FreeSO community for everything they built, shared, documented, and preserved.

Why This Matters to Me

For me personally, FreeSO gave me something I will always be thankful for. I got to meet familiar friends again. I made new ones. I got to step back into a world I thought was gone.

I even got to share it with my mother.

We started building a skill lot together. It was small, unfinished, and probably not anything impressive to anyone else, but to us, it mattered. We only had a few days to work on it before her cancer returned. Soon after, she became bedridden, and she passed away in April 2023.

That memory is part of why SimHaven exists.

What SimHaven Is, and Is Not

This project is not about trying to replace FreeSO, claim ownership of anyone else’s work, or pretend we created what came before us. It is about keeping the door open. It is about giving people a place to return to, a place to remember, and maybe even a place to make new memories.

SimHaven is an unofficial fan-run community project inspired by The Sims Online and made possible because of the work FreeSO put into preserving that experience. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the FreeSO team or community. We simply appreciate them, respect what they created, and want to continue honoring the spirit of the game.

We are also not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by Electronic Arts, Maxis, or The Sims franchise. The Sims, The Sims Online, EA, Maxis, and all related names, logos, sounds, characters, and trademarks belong to their respective owners.

And, since it needs to be said plainly: SimHaven is not here to sell access, charge subscriptions, or claim someone else’s property. This is a preservation-minded fan project built for nostalgia, community, and the experience of stepping back into a world many of us still care about.

A Note to EA

To EA: thank you for creating The Sims Online in the first place. It gave a lot of us friendships, stories, and memories that lasted long after the original servers closed. SimHaven exists because that experience still matters, and because some communities are worth preserving.

SimHaven is here for the people who still remember.

Welcome home.
